As someone who has been drawn to your philosophical position and found in your work an answer to the question I had in my field of study, namely, posthumanism, I am excited to have this opportunity to converse with you, and thankful to Galmuri for the opportunity and to you in advance for taking time to answer the following questions. The question I had as a posthumanist scholar was why and how we should value nonhuman beings, and it seems to me that most answers have looked to humans to explain the value (including those highly critical of anthropocentrism who emphasize our ethical failure in dealing with nonhumans). By contrast, OOO looks to objects themselves and shows how “alluring” they are, and my current research tries to map out how to discover this “allure” and consider what kinds of, to use Alphonso Lingis’s word, “directives” are entailed.

Hoping there might another time to talk about my posthumanist question with you, I am now moving on to the questions concerning your lecture and book, Speculative Realism. There are six questions. Some are about your lecture and book; others about OOO in general.

1. This might be a simple, rather silly, question but one has to ask after listening to your brief account of “the events that gave rise to the short-lived Speculative Realism movement.” Obviously, “short-lived” was the momentous alignment of the four scholars made under the name of speculative realism, but not what that alignment gave rise to with that name. The four of you have since gone separate ways, but I wonder if the others have responded to your account of the events in any way after the publication of the book. I am asking this question not just because I am curious about their reactions but because I’d like to know if the four of you are interested in others’ work—or you are in constant conversation with one another—in a way that might lead to another convention amongst yourselves, which should be amazing, given how influential speculative realism has become since the 2007 conference.

2. While your succinct explanation helps, the fourfold is still a difficult concept for me to grasp, especially when I start to think of objects around me or experiences I have in that scheme—which one belongs to which, how to tell one from another, and so on. Then, I start to think of Speculative Realism or OOO in that way. That is, what kind of object is it? Since it is made up of thoughts and words about objects, and assuming the objects are real, could it be that OOO is a “sensual object”? Meanwhile, is philosophy itself the same or is it a “real object”? Finally, can a “sensual object” become a “real object,” which could also mean that OOO comes to be philosophy itself?

3. As you point out, “Brassier and Meillassoux represent the rationalist wing of Speculative Realism” while they differ in their position on “the question of finitude.” And then you explain that OOO differs from them in its “take on correlationism” by criticizing that “both Kant and Heidegger limit finitude to a special condition of the human being.” As a posthumanist scholar, I totally agree with your criticism of anthropocentrism rooted in Kant and Heidegger. But I am not sure if Brassier and Meillassoux are susceptible to the same criticism. You seem to suggest that their rationalist position, one expressed in science and the other in mathematics, is too human. I wonder whether your opposition to them is against rationalism in general or their particular choice of science and mathematics. Or, perhaps, I am misunderstanding your position, so could you explain the problem you see in Meillassoux and Brassier?

4. To quote your last words in Speculative Realism: “I would like to challenge the younger readers of this book, in particular, eventually to supersede the various Speculative Realist currents after first digesting what has made them important.” Among various speculative Realist currents, your OOO in particular has drawn many young readers—a few of them, like Peter Wolfendale, showing up just to disagree but many—notably, Timothy Morton—inspired by OOO and continuing to work with it in their own fields. The latter people are now found not just in the humanities but also in arts, architecture and others. I wonder how you see this expansion. Some philosophical and theoretical thoughts that became ‘popular’ too quickly are in danger of being misinterpreted, misapplied and prematurely exhausted. Do you have any concerns about the ‘popularity’ of OOO? On the other hand, is there any field or area where you would like to see OOO bloom?

5. In an interview you had with Lucy Kimbell in 2013, you pointed out that intellectuals became too political and that philosophers shouldn’t be political. Do you still maintain the same position? Asking this question, I should clarify myself that by “political,” I don’t mean pursuing political power. What I mean by the term is being interested in social issues and holding particular positions on the issues so as to demand certain actions. The reason I am asking the question is that in our reality, a lot has happened since 2013—the pandemic is the most noticeable, but climate crisis and technology-related issues like the rapid advancement in artificial intelligence are as noticeable. The reality we should speculate on may be the same, but the reality we experience seems to demand changes in the way we think, live and die. So I am hoping to hear what you think about this changing reality and how OOO should respond.

6. My last question is somewhat personally yet scholarly motivated. As I have mentioned, I have been fascinated by Alphonso Lingis’s works, not just his thoughts but also his writing—the almost ethnographic way he uncovers his thoughts. Reading your book, Guerilla Metaphysics, where you review the phenomenological tradition from Hussserl to Lingis, I sense you see your philosophy closer to Lingis than other philosophers, especially in your discussion of enjoyment, elements and other notions. And I know Lingis was your teacher. Could you say a little about your relationship with him, how your OOO is similar and different compared to his philosophy?

Thanks,
Dongshin Yi
